Goldilocks Got It Right: The Three Bears

Some pieces practically write their own story, and this one does exactly that. This Three Bears fetish by Zuni carver Ed Lementino immediately brings Goldilocks to mind, but instead of porridge and chairs, what you get here is strength and power, multiplied by three. Each bear has its own presence, its own posture, yet they come together as a single, balanced form that feels intentional and grounded.

Carved from a combination of onyx and zebra stone, the contrast in materials gives the piece depth and movement. The dark, steady weight of the onyx pairs beautifully with the lighter patterning of the zebra stone, creating a natural rhythm as your eye moves around the carving. The turquoise eyes add just the right pop of color, bringing life and focus to each bear without overpowering the form.

The base and adornment elevate the piece even further. Shell heishe, turquoise nuggets, and branch coral are bundled together, adding texture and a subtle sense of ceremony. It feels complete, not just as a carving, but as a statement piece. At 2 inches long, 1½ inches high, and 1 inch across, it carries far more presence than its size suggests.

Symbolically, bears represent strength, power, protection, and resilience, and with three bears together, that symbolism is amplified. This is a fetish that speaks to balance, unity, and collective strength. It is bold without being loud, detailed without being busy, and unmistakably memorable.

A piece like this fits just as easily into a serious collection as it does into a display meant to spark conversation. Familiar, powerful, and just right.
